Alternative Healing Modalities That You Should Consider

By Eliza Mendoza

There are many alternative healing modalities that have withstood the storm occasioned by advances in mainstream medicine. Most of them enjoy the trust that has been built over hundreds or even thousands of years. These treatments have no scientific backing and are mainly based on beliefs. There are minor differences that exist even for the same modality as one moves from one geographical region to another. We will look at some of the commonly alternative treatments.

Acupuncture is one of the commonly used therapies in alternative medicine. Acupuncturists base their belief in a form of energy known as Qi. This energy is always flowing in the body. Well-being is dependent on the balance of this flow and whenever the flow is interrupted, we say that one is sick. In the treatment, fine needles are inserted into the body at points located in the paths used by the energy. The insertion helps to restore the balance of the energy and to restore well-being.

Chiropractic medicine is mainly used for conditions that affect the axial skeleton. Lower back pain is a common problem all over the world. In fact, it is estimated that over 80% of the entire world population will be affected by the condition in the course of their lifetime. Chiropractors are unlikely to run out of clients for this reason. These therapists treat conditions by manipulating the muscles and connective tissues that are attached to the spine. They are also said to be effective in managing menstrual pain, asthma, fibromyalgia and hypertension.

Yoga is another option that one may consider. It is a treatment that is used for mental, emotional and physical conditions. Historically, this treatment is strongly associated with the Indian subcontinent. It is particularly central to the practice of some religions such as Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Hinduism. Some of the mental conditions said to benefit from the treatment include anxiety and depression.

Ayurvedic medicine is the other therapy that also originated in India. The treatment has close similarity to yoga. The objective of this treatment is to establish a connection between the spirit, the mind and the body. When all these components are balanced, a life force in the body is stimulated. The amount of life force that is stimulated is proportional to the intensity of therapy.

Another commonly used treatment is called homeopathy. This has European origins and is based on the ancient belief known referred to as the law of similar. Put simply, the law means that the cause and cure of a given disease are similar. This means that if the cause is known then the cure can be worked out easily.

The list of options is endless. There are many other forms that are practised including hypnotherapy, naturopathy, aromatherapy, massage, hydrotherapy, nutrition therapy, massage and biofeedback among others. The side effect profile is tolerable for most of them. Commonly encountered side effects include pain, swelling and infections.

As you look for alternative healing modalities, you need to ensure that your preferred centre is licenced as per the local laws and regulations. This will guarantee you quality service and will reduce the chances of side effects. You also need to remember that these therapies are not backed by scientific evidence and should be used cautiously.
